James Wright
Kancho
For more than four decades, James Wright Kancho has dedicated his life to the study, preservation, and practical application of authentic Japanese martial arts.
After beginning his martial arts journey in Judo, he discovered the classical martial traditions of Japan in the early 1980s—a turning point that would define the course of his life. Determined to study these arts at their source, he relocated to Japan, where he spent more than three decades immersed in their practice, history, and transmission.
Unlike many martial artists who begin teaching early in their careers, Kancho chose a different path. Rather than building a school or cultivating a public profile, he devoted himself almost entirely to developing his own knowledge, technical ability, and understanding of the traditions he had committed to preserving. Throughout his years in Japan, his focus remained the same: to become the most complete student he could be.
That commitment earned him the respect of students and senior practitioners alike. He became known for his exceptional technical knowledge, attention to historical accuracy, and ability to understand not only how techniques were performed, but why they existed within the larger framework of each tradition. His work has been recognized through international seminars, instructional publications, media appearances, and interviews in written publications.
By 2023, after more than forty years devoted primarily to study and personal development, Kancho made a deliberate decision to begin sharing the knowledge he had accumulated. He founded the Kobukan Kobudo Renmei with a clear purpose: to preserve authentic Japanese martial traditions through structured education while remaining faithful to their original principles.
At the heart of Kobukan is a simple philosophy.
Authentic martial arts should be taught through structured progression, documented curriculum, and direct instruction. Advancement should be earned through consistent effort, understanding, and demonstrated ability—not limited by unnecessary barriers, artificial secrecy, or gatekeeping.
That philosophy is the foundation his organization, and of Kobukan University, where students from around the world study through live instruction, in-person seminars, published curriculum, and an expanding educational platform designed to preserve these traditions for future generations.
For Kancho, preserving Japanese martial arts is about more than passing on techniques.
It is about preserving a complete system of knowledge—one that develops technical ability, historical understanding, sound judgment, and lifelong growth through disciplined study.
